About post-war Europe, the beginning of European integration and the Cold War

grbesa jakovina 12 03 webZagreb, 3rd April 2015 ‚Äď The last lecture as part of the course "European political history" was held, as well as the third lecture on public relations, within the study organized by IEC and the Academy with the support of the Dutch Liberal Party D66.

Tvrtko Jakovina from the Faculty of Philosophy of Zagreb spoke about the situation in Europe and the world after World War II, and that determined the course of world events and political relations in the second half of the twentieth century. Jakovina explained that in terms of the breakdown of traditional empires and great powers of Europe, two conflicting ideological blocs were created, gathered around the US and the Soviet Union. On the other hand, the destruction of Europe in the First World War and the impotence of former great powers was enough motivation for Europeans to launch the process of European integration. As the first step in this long plan is Schumann's plan from the year 1950, that launched the process of integration and resulted with creating European Union as we know today. That is why on 9th of May we celebrate Day of Europe.

After lecture on history, Marijana GrbeŇ°a from the Faculty of political science continued with public relations in politics. GrbeŇ°a focused in explaining one of the most famous phenomenon in the world of media, spin doctors. Below, professor placed the importance on the mode of action and work of "spin" doctor pointing out the logic of their existence, and explained the criticism from the position of the ideals of democratic politics. At the very least, the students participated in a small workshop branding candidates, in very current context of expected elections in Zagreb.

IEC and the Academy thank professor Tvrtko Jakovina on excellent lectures on European history, especially historical events in Croatia and the region.
